In the wake of their crushing defeat at the hands of the San Francisco 49ers, the Philadelphia Eagles have recruited some defensive support.

Multiple reports state that veteran linebacker Shaq Leonard has agreed to a one-year contract with the Eagles.

The Dallas Cowboys were also interested in Leonard and invited him to visit them last week, but Leonard ultimately decided to sign a contract with the Eagles.

The 28-year-old Leonard was unexpectedly dismissed by the Indianapolis Colts last month. Though Leonard claimed he was as shocked by the Colts’ decision as everyone else was, there were rumors that he requested to be cut after seeing his playing time limited.

After being taken by the Colts in the second round of the 2018 NFL Draft, Leonard has established himself as one of the top linebackers in the game. In four different Pro Bowls between 2018 and 2021, he was selected. During that time, he was also awarded a First-team All-Pro three times.

On Sunday, the 49ers easily defeated the Eagles, winning 42–19. Although Philadelphia had already expressed interest in signing Leonard, it wouldn’t be shocking if their experience in the NFC Championship Game rematch increased their sense of urgency.
