There’s ‘Steam’ That Justin Jefferson Could Be Traded by the Vikings?

Should we purchase or market this as true news?

Is there truly “steam” in the offseason for the Vikings to consider trading Justin Jefferson? That’s how Pioneer Press columnist Charley Walters phrased a throwaway quip that appeared near the end of this weekend’s piece.

Meanwhile, rumors are still circulating that Justin Jefferson might be traded by the Vikings. The $31 million pay ceiling rise in the NFL for each team may force Jefferson to accept a longer contract than the $150 million over five years that was originally anticipated.

The word “steam” is vague and seems to occupy a middle ground between factual information and conjecture. Walters isn’t stating here that “a source says the Vikings could make Jefferson available for trade.” He might be relaying what he has heard, or it might be more of an opinion or a reiteration of something that has been suggested by others. It’s similar to stating that “there’s buzz” about potential events. Is that something to report? I’m not sure. And that’s not a shot at discrediting renowned Twin Cities journalist Walters.

Controversial NFL news aggregator Dov Kleiman used that line from his column to create this four million-view tweet:

And that’s how the NFL news cycle on social media generally operates, especially during the offseason. It’s critical to keep in mind to accept things as they are.

Regarding Jefferson, there isn’t much evidence to suggest the Vikings are thinking of doing anything besides locking up the team’s star player for a record-breaking contract deal. Of course, nothing can ever be completely ruled out. However, as of right now, it should still be expected that Jefferson’s camp and the Vikings will eventually come to an agreement that keeps Jefferson in Minnesota for an extended period of time.
